A Lexington apartment building was evacuated briefly Monday afternoon when a man fired a bullet through his apartment door, then shot himself.
The apartment manager at 208 Lakeshore Drive told police that the resident of one of the apartments was being evicted, and Monday was to have been his last day. When the manager knocked on the apartment door and no one answered, he used his key to enter and saw the man sitting in a chair with a gun, said Lt. Chris Van Brackel of Lexington police. The manager immediately left and called police, he said.
Van Brackel said that when two officers arrived at about 2:30 p.m., they knocked and identified themselves. At that point, there were two gunshots from inside the apartment, the first of which went through the door.
After police were able to enter, they found the man, later identified by the coroner as Douglas Keith, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest.
Keith, 49, was taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Van Brackel said it was unclear whether Keith had been trying to shoot at police with the first shot he fired.
Taul Funeral Home in Mount Sterling is in charge of arrangements.
