Outages in parts of downtown Lexington Saturday night caused worse-than-usual congestion as fans headed to Rupp Arena for the 8 p.m. UK-Mississippi Valley State game, police said.
Two outages initially left 717 customers of Kentucky Utilities without power in the area of Vine, Maxwell and Rose streets, according to the utility's Web site.
Because signals were out, police officers directed traffic at Rose Street's intersections with Main, Vine, High and Maxwell streets, plus the High Street intersections with Martin Luther King Boulevard and Euclid Avenue, said Lexington Police Lt. Chris Van Brackle.
The outage was first reported at 5:48 p.m. Saturday. The exact cause was not immediately known, but utility spokesman Cliff Feltham said it was due to an equipment failure.
Traffic signals at the intersections were working again by 9 p.m.
