For the fourth time, Saint Joseph East has been named one of the 100 Top Hospitals in the United States in an annual ranking of the nation's 3,000 acute-care general hospitals.
The hospitals were ranked by Thomson Reuters.
"The criteria for this award are rigorous, and they are national in scope," said Saint Joseph East president Ken Haynes. "Our community leaders, management team, physicians, employees and volunteers deserve many thanks for their commitment to excellence."
The data for the 2011 study were collected from a number of public sources, including federal Medicare statistics. Hospitals do not apply, nor do winners pay, to receive the award.
Thomson Reuters, a media company, compared each hospital to peers in five categories based on their size and function.
Only three other Kentucky hospitals made the list. They were Flaget Memorial Hospital in Bardstown, a sister hospital to Saint Joseph's, and Harlan Appalachian Regional Healthcare Hospital in Harlan in the small community hospital division, and St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Edgewood, which made the list as a teaching hospital.
