Volunteers are needed to help clean up one of Lexington's polluted streams, Wolf Run, at the Cardinal Valley Clean Stream and Watershed Festival at Valley Park on Saturday.
Workers are needed to remove trash, litter and debris from the creek from 1 to 4 p.m. The event is part of the 2011 Great American Cleanup, sponsored by the Keep Lexington Beautiful Commission.
The festival portion of the event will run from 4 to 6 p.m. and will include educational booths and giveaways.
The event is being coordinated by 11th District Council member Peggy Henson and sponsored by Lexington's Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works, Friends of Wolf Run, University of Kentucky Community Engagement, the Cardinal Valley Neighborhood Association, the Keep Lexington Beautiful Commission and Bluegrass PRIDE (Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment).
Wolf Run is one of many creeks in Fayette County polluted by storm-water runoff. Trash, litter, automotive fluids and even pet waste contribute to pollution in creeks. For information and to volunteer for the event, go to Wolfrun.eventbrite.com.
