A 17-year-old was taken to the hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at the funeral of Brian Edward Carr, Jr. who was fatally shot in Lexington last weekend.
The teen was in the parking lot of Consolidated Baptist Church on Russell Cave Road Saturday afternoon when a .22-caliber pistol he had tucked in his pants discharged, striking his leg, Lexington Police Lt. Edward Hart said. Police did not release his name because he was a juvenile but said he was a friend of Carr's.
The injuries were not life threatening. It was unclear why the teen had a gun. It was also unclear if he would be charged with being a minor in possession of a handgun.
The family of Carr, 19, requested additional police protection at his funeral, Hart said. Three patrol officers were nearby when the shooting occurred, and the teen was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.
No arrests have been made in the murder of Bryan Carr, who was gunned down outside a bar on East Main Street one week ago.
Aside from the accidental shooting, there were "no other problems as far as people outside the victim's family and friends causing any trouble at the funeral," Hart said.
Carr was the ninth homicide in Lexington in 2011, the latest in a year that has so far seen an unusually high amount of gun violence.
