A 4-year-old girl who started her mother's SUV caused two crashes Monday afternoon and escaped uninjured after jumping out of the moving vehicle.
Lexington police Lt. Chris Van Brackel said the child's mother was asleep at their home on the 3400 block of Bold Bidder Drive when the girl took the keys to a Chevrolet Suburban from the mother's purse.
She apparently used a pink plastic stepstool to climb into the vehicle, started the vehicle and put it in reverse. Van Brackel said she backed out of the driveway and into a school bus on Bold Bidder at 4:18 p.m. The bus had 22 children on board.
The child then put the SUV into drive and drove into her yard and a neighboring yard, then jumped out the driver's-side door.
Van Brackel said the girl rolled across the grass, receiving only a scrape on her ankle.
The vehicle continued to roll down a hill and across Bold Bidder Drive, stopping when it hit a parked church van head-on.
Van Brackel said none of the children on the bus was injured.
The bus received "really, really minor damage," and another bus was brought to the scene to take the children home, he said.
