Division of Waste Management employees will celebrate Pride Day from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Lyric Theatre. Pride Day recognizes the public service of city sanitation workers and marks the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1968, in Memphis. King was there to march in support of city sanitation workers who staged a walkout to protest wages and poor working conditions.
Pride Day speakers will include the Revs. Troy Thomas and Maxine Thomas, and Baxter Leach who was a Memphis sanitation worker who participated in the 1968 protest. The event also will include a musical presentation, and refreshments will be served following the program. The event is free.
