R.J. Corman Railroad Group employees worked Thursday on the installation of three spires, based on the design of the spires at Churchill Downs, on the roof of the glass building that houses Old Smokey, a refurbished steam locomotive, in a parking lot near the back of Rupp Arena in Lexington. The work started Tuesday and was expected to be completed by Friday. The middle cupola is 45 feet tall and the end ones are 28 1/2 feet tall. Old Smokey made its inaugural run from Louisville to Lexington on May 24, 2008. Before coming to the United States, the steam engine hauled passengers and coal in China until 2005.
