Loads of rock were removed as work on section 2B of the Clays Mill Road improvement project continued Monday in Lexington.
Section 2B is the area between Twain Ridge Drive and Higbee Mill Road. Clays Mill Road, which is 3.7 miles long, runs through a mixed-use area of homes, schools, churches and some commercial property.
Increased development in southwest Lexington has resulted in increased traffic on Clays Mill. Current traffic volume ranges from 15,000 to 20,000 vehicles a day.
City transportation planners estimate that the number could increase to 20,000 to 25,000 vehicles a day by 2020.
The area also has experienced a lot of accidents (363 in one 21-month period), many of which were rear-end collisions.
