The Urban County Council decided unanimously Thursday to increase the fine for parking in a public handicapped spot to $250. The fine had been $15, one of the lowest in the Midwest for parking illegally in a handicapped spot.
Additionally, the council approved an ordinance to require more signage in private parking lots for the striped spaces next to many handicapped parking spots. People who use wheelchair ramps cannot get out of their vehicles if someone parks in the striped spaces. City officials have said there will be grant money available for businesses to make the sign changes.
Both ordinances take effect immediately.
