Contractors continued to repair a sanitary sewer line Tuesday near the intersection of Man o' War Boulevard and Rapid Run Drive after part of the 24-inch line collapsed Sunday afternoon, according to a Division of Environmental Policy news release.
Pumps were being placed in the Gar Court/Niagara Drive area that will be used to divert wastewater around the collapsed sewer pipe. Once the bypass pumps are functioning, workers can examine the collapsed pipe and determine the extent of necessary repairs, the release said.
On Monday, contractors were able to stop sewage from flowing into a nearby creek and from there into a pond at the Racquet Club apartment complex off Rapid Run. The pond will be drained and pressure-washed, and the sewage will be removed. Residents are asked to avoid the area around the pond until it has been cleaned.
According to the release, crews from Lexington's Division of Water Quality installed three aerators downstream from the spill to provide additional oxygen in the water.
