Curtain comes down on classic film series
The Kentucky Theatre's Summer Classic Series ends its season with 81/2 (1963). It's about a director, played by Marcello Mastroianni, who has lost interest in filmmaking as he endures marital trouble. Shows are at 1:30 and 7:15 p.m. at the theater, 214 East Main Street. Roots & Heritage Festival begins
It started as a neighborhood street fair in 1989; now this event draws thousands for a celebration of black culture, featuring concerts, arts and crafts, a parade and more, near Third and Elm streets. The festival runs through Sunday. (Rootsfestky.com)
The circus is in town

14th annual Dog Paddle
Take your canine friend for a swim from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Woodland Aquatic Center, 190 Old Park Avenue; $10 a dog with a limit of two people per dog, $5 a person after the limit.
