A fire near Nelms Avenue and South Broadway, near the Red Mile, destroyed a building late Wednesday.
Lexington fire department Battalion Chief Mark Harvey said firefighters were called to the building about 11:30 p.m. after flames and smoke were seen.
The fire engulfed a small, shed-like building and extended into a larger building, formerly the Henry M. Stevens Roofing Company. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before the larger building caught fire, Harvey said.
Two homeless people were inside the larger building. They were found inside a bathroom and were taken away from the building to be treated, Harvey said. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Investigators arrived just before midnight.
