A woman killed in a duplex fire on Clays Mill Road Sunday night has been identified as Patricia Washington, 63, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.
The duplex where Washington lived was in flames when firefighters arrived about 8 p.m. Sunday, and there was heavy smoke, Battalion Chief Mark Harvey said.
Firefighters knew a person might be inside and put out the fire quickly, Harvey said. But Washington was dead when firefighters found her.
She died of smoke inhalation and thermal burns, according to the coroner’s office.

A man who lived with Washington was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but was not hospitalized, Harvey said.
A family of three that lived in the other side of the duplex made it out safely but could not stay in the apartment Sunday night, Harvey said. The electricity was cut off after the fire, and the building had severe fire and smoke damage.
