A 14-year-old boy was taken to a Lexington hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life threatening after another juvenile accidentally shot him in the neck, police said.
The boy was with two others, ages 16 and 17, at the Raintree Apartments Tuesday night playing with a handgun at the time of the shooting, Lexington police spokeswoman Brenna Angel said. The apartments are near Richmond Road and Man o’ War Boulevard.
The juveniles did not know the gun was loaded and it went off, striking the 14-year-old, Angel said. The 16-year-old and 17-year-old panicked and ran after the shooting.
Police were originally called at about 7:30 p.m. for what was reported as a possible drive-by shooting that may have been drug related, Angel said. Soon after the original call, one of the juveniles told his parents what happened and then spoke to police.
Police would not say which of the juveniles fired the gun. Police are investigating how the teens got the gun.
At last check, the 14-year-old was in stable condition at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, Angel said. No charges have been filed.
