A group of walkers and runners from Kentucky, Tennessee and Michigan gathered Friday for a flag-unfurling ceremony on the steps of the state Capitol in Frankfort as part of the coast-to-coast Old Glory Relay honoring veterans.
The group, which includes civilians and military veterans, is participating in the 59-day, 3,540-mile relay that made its way through Kentucky on the way to Washington, D.C.
The relay, which started Sept. 11 in San Francisco, is put on by Team Red, White & Blue, which supports U.S. veterans. The teams of runners are moving the single flag across the country in a show of support for military members returning to their communities and to increase understanding between civilians and veterans. The flag had traveled 2,787 miles in 47 days. Photos by Herald-Leader photographer Charles Bertram.
