A man was killed Tuesday while trying to move a heavy fireproof safe down some steps, Jessamine County Coroner Mike Hughes said.
The 69-year-old man died at the scene shortly before noon on Ponder Way, across U.S. 68 from Southland Christian Church in northern Jessamine County, Hughes said.
The man and a friend were moving the safe down some outside access steps into a basement when they lost control, Hughes said.
“It kind of flipped down and knocked him down and pinned him to the ground,” Hughes said. The safe weighed perhaps 1,000 pounds or more, Hughes said, and it knocked him down three to five steps.
He died of blunt-force trauma, Hughes said.
The man was moving into the house.
