Two people were killed and three were critically injured Sunday afternoon in a three-car collision in Nicholasville.
A maroon SUV was traveling on U.S. 27 near Carpenter's Dish Barn about 1 p.m. when it moved into oncoming traffic. The SUV glanced one car and hit a Ford pickup driven by head-on, Nicholasville police officer Kevin Grimes said.
The driver of the pickup, Rusty Johnson, 28, of Lexington and the driver of the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene, Grimes said.
Three passengers from the pickup were transported to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, Grimes said.
Never miss a local story.
The woman in the car that was glanced managed to avoid the crash by swerving, Grimes said. She was not injured.
A Nicholasville Police Department reconstruction team was at the scene for several hours, and southbound traffic was being diverted from U.S. 27 to Catnip Hill Road, Grimes said. One lane of northbound traffic remained open.
It was too early to tell Sunday afternoon whether speed or alcohol were factors in the accident, Grimes said.
It did not appear that the SUV had slowed down or braked before colliding with the pickup, Grimes said. But it was unclear why.
The names of the victims were not released Sunday afternoon, pending notification of family members by the coroner, Grimes said.
