The jacket drive for Jessamine County's homeless children continues through Friday. Donations of gently used or new coats of all sizes, toddler through adult, are needed. Gloves and hats are also accepted. Drop-off locations include Papa Murphy's Pizza, Jessamine Cleaners, the Jessamine County Chamber of Commerce and the Jessamine County Public Library. A goal of 300 coats has been set, said Jessica Dodgen, Jessamine County Schools coordinator for homeless education.
Winners of K-9 Run/Walk for a Cure
The K-9 2K Run/Walk for a Cure took place Oct. 8 at the Jessamine County Fairgrounds. The top three finishers were Mike Krichner, George Simpson III and Morgan Simpson. In the "with dog" category, the top finishers were Ben West and his dog Callie; Aaron Ames and Argos; and Joyce Allen and Jackson.
The event was sponsored by the Jessamine County Health Department and UK Cooperative Extension. Proceeds benefit the UK Markey Cancer Center and the Jessamine County Breast and Cervical Cancer Coalition.
Free diabetes class offered
The Jessamine County Health Department will have a free diabetes management class at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at 215 East Maple Street in Nicholasville. Central Baptist diabetes educator Nancy Miller will provide instruction on diabetes medications and the proper use of a blood glucose monitoring system. During the class, a registered dietician will explain how food choices can help effectively manage diabetes and pre-diabetes. A free snack will be provided. Call (859) 885-4149 to pre-register.
