A man was arrested and charged with arson Wednesday afternoon after police say he dragged furniture from a West Brown Street home in Nicholasville and ignited it.
The fire spread to the home and seven children had to be evacuated, according to a news release by the Nicholasville Police Department.
Derek P. Wells, 27, was charged with first-degree arson and violation of a domestic violence order for being at the home and having contact with the family inside, police said.
Wells is accused of dragging out several pieces of furniture and using gasoline to ignite it in the yard, police said.
Once the fire reached the house, the fire department was called, police said. Firefighters were able to prevent the damage to the home from becoming "too extensive."
The fire department summoned police, police said.
Wells is currently at the Jessamine County jail, police said.
