Wilmore has received a $1 million grant to help pay for fixing infrastructure deficiencies at its wastewater treatment plant, the mayor announced Saturday.
Mayor Harold Rainwater said the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant will go toward a $3.71 million project that could start late next year.
The city is asking the USDA’s rural development agency for an additional $2.5 million in financing.
Rainwater said Asbury University, Asbury Theological Seminary, Wesley Village Senior Living Community, the Jessamine County Fiscal Court, the Jessamine County Economic Development Authority and 66 Wilmore households also contributed or pledged to the give to the cause. The city has pledged $160,000.

“The entire Wilmore community can be proud of this outcome, as it will help us contain the amount of increase in sewer user charges,” Rainwater said.
He said parts of the water treatment facilities are more than 40 years old.
