The Eastern Kentucky University police department arrested a freshman from Williamsburg on Friday on charges stemming from a dorm fire that displaced students.
Samual Stephen McFarland, who lives in Commonwealth Hall, is charged with first-degree arson, first-degree criminal mischief and first-degree wanton endangerment. He is accused of setting two bulletin boards on fire in the dormitory early Thursday morning, EKU spokesman Marc Whitt said.
The fires, on the eighth and 19th floors, damaged the walls and activated the building's sprinkler systems.
The fires were set shortly before 4:15 a.m. Thursday. The building was closed, and residents were temporarily relocated.
McFarland has been lodged in the Madison County Detention Center on a $ 50,000 bond.
