A Richmond man was charged with attempted murder Sunday after he allegedly tried to kill his wife with rat poison, Richmond police said.
William Cain, 55, was lodged in the Madison County jail.
Cain's wife told police that he prepared a pot of coffee and then left their home on West Walnut Street. Police recovered the pot and "found what appeared to be rat poison in the bottom," police said in a release.
Cain was found at a Fifth Street residence and was taken to the Richmond police station for questioning. AFter that interview, he was charged and taken to the jail.

The residue has not been confirmed as rat poison, but Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock said "we're satisfied based on the investigation we conducted that rat poison was in fact put into a coffee pot."
