A 38-year-old woman was killed Thursday night when she was struck by a car while standing on a busy highway, Kentucky State Police said.
Heather Holwerda, of Berea died at the scene the Madison County coroner's office said.
The accident occurred about 9:30 p.m. on U.S. 421, also known as Battlefield Memorial Highway, just north of Big Hill Road near Berea.
Holwerda was standing in the northbound lane when she was struck by a northbound 1998 Monte Carlo driven by Clint Combs, 22, of Lancaster, state police said.
It was raining heavily at the time, Coroner Jimmy Cornelison said.
Cornelison said Holwerda lived on U.S. 421, but it was unclear why she was in the roadway. One report suggested that she was chasing a dog, he said. But Cornelison said she probably was walking to or from another home along the road.
State police said Combs wasn't driving under the influence, but he was arrested.
Records at the Madison County jail show that a man named Clinton Combs, 22, of Berea, was booked into the jail at 11:58 p.m. Thursday on a contempt of court citation.
