Survive and move on. That was the mantra of a relieved Steve Helton, whose Scott County team advanced to the finals of the 42nd District Tournament with a 65-43 victory over Sayre.
Scott County, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, fell behind 17-9 at the end of the first quarter. Sayre got seven points from junior Anne Macneil, and Scott County shot 4-for-18.
"We weren't talking, we weren't communicating, we weren't moving; we all looked slow," said Scott County junior Madisen Webb, who led the Lady Cardinals with 24 points.
But Scott County's full-court pressure forced 10 turnovers in the second quarter, and the Cards took a 29-22 lead into halftime. Sophomore Kristen Stainback's eight second-quarter points fueled a 20-5 advantage.
Never miss a local story.
"They turned up the juice and really started to overplay," Sayre Coach Scotty Sutton said. "Sometimes you try to take advantage of throwing over the top, but with their great athletes, they were able to recover."
More ballhandling issues plagued Sayre's guards in the second half, and the Lady Spartans finished the game with 36 turnovers. Scott County had 14 steals on the night.
"The way we play, we've got to have defense turn into offense," said Helton, whose team scored 41 points off of turnovers. "We're at our best when we score in transition. We need to get to 80-90 shots a game."
Alex McKenzie and Stainback each had 14 points for the Lady Cardinals.
Macneil was Sayre's lone player in double figures, with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
With the victory, Scott County advanced to the 11th Region Tournament next week, but will play the winner of Bryan Station and Henry Clay in Thursday's finals.
"We need to wake up. We come out like that Thursday in the first half, and it'll be a short night for us," Helton said. "We need to come out, and we need to play."
