A man killed himself Wednesday night after he stole a vehicle with an 8-month-old girl in the back seat and led police on a wild chase, police said.
The Madison County Coroner's office identified the man as Sidney Wayne Fee, Jr., 35, of Berea.
Kentucky State Trooper Robert Purdy said police were notified after a man was seen taking a Hyundai Sante Fe SUV with a child inside from a Pilot truck stop in Georgetown.
A police officer in an unmarked vehicle near Clays Ferry spotted the SUV, and the chase began in the southbound lanes of Interstate 75, Purdy said. The vehicle took exit 90A, near Martin Bypass in Richmond. The driver of the SUV turned left on Union City Road, turned right on Dunbar Lane and drove through a set of gates at a dead end, Purdy said.
The vehicle turned left on Four Mile Road and eventually ran into a tree on Box Ankle Road. The driver then got out and ran into a wooded area.
Several officers from local law enforcement agencies chased and surrounded the man. The man then shot and killed himself, Purdy said.
The man's name was to be released after his relatives were notified.
The child was taken to Baptist Health in Richmond as a precaution and was later reunited with her parents, Purdy said.
