One person died in a small-plane crash near Delaney Ferry Road in Woodford County on Wednesday night.
The plane crashed about 10 p.m. near Fire Gate 161 as it approached Blue Grass Airport.
Officer Pat Melton of the Versailles Police Department said it was a single-engine plane. Melton said the pilot, the only person on board, was killed.
A staging area was set up at Pinckard Baptist Church, near the intersection of Pinckard Pike (Ky. 169) and Delaney Ferry Road.
The National Transportation Safety Board was investigating, Melton said.
Joe Robinson, a farmer who lives near the crash site, said he didn't hear the crash but learned about it from a friend.
"It didn't catch on fire. It hit the trees, and the way I was told it splintered," Robinson said.
Robinson said he was told by a neighbor "that he heard it spittin' and sputterin' and he didn't hear nothin' after that."
"When you see the big fire engines from the airport pull in, you know something big is going on," he said.
A news conference about the crash has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday. Watch Kentucky.com for more on this story throughout the day.
