A Versailles man has been charged with murder in the Friday night shooting death of a teenager, police said Tuesday.
Alexander Muniz, 27, was arrested at 1:35 a.m. Tuesday at the Versailles police department, said Lt. Daniel Clark. He is charged with murder in the death of James Michael Crowe, 18. Police and the Woodford County coroner have said Crowe was from Prestonsburg, but his obituary with Nelson Frazer Funeral Home in Martin listed his address as Campton.
Crowe's body was found in a parking lot at Arbor Place Drive, off Clifton Road in Versailles. Clark said Crowe, whose funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, had been staying with friends in Versailles for several weeks. He was shot multiple times, Clark said.
Muniz and Crowe, who were both unemployed, apparently knew each other, but Clark said a motive for the shooting isn't known. Clark said he didn't think the shooting had anything to do with drugs.
"The detectives are still working on that, exactly what all took place Friday just prior to the shooting," Clark said.
Interviews with witnesses led police to look for Muniz, who was taken to the police department for questioning, Clark said. The weapon used to shoot Crowe has not been located, Clark said.
Muniz was charged with public intoxication in 2004, possession of marijuana in 2007, and with three traffic violations since 2009, Clark said.
Muniz remains in the Woodford County jail in lieu of a $100,000 full-cash bond. He will make his first appearance in Woodford District Court on Monday, Clark said.
