FRANKFORT — After four decades being managed by the National Audubon Society, the Buckley Wildlife Sanctuary is now under new management.
The State Journal reports that Life Adventure Center of the Bluegrass, a Versailles-based nonprofit focused on outdoor education and skills training, is now managing the sanctuary.
Byron Marlowe, program director for Buckley Wildlife, says Life Adventure Center was picked to manage the 379-acre property that spans Woodford and Franklin counties in July.
Marlowe said the sanctuary has no major flyways to protect and no critical pieces of habitat, so it wasn't imperative for the society to manage the sanctuary as a nature preserve.
Never miss a local story.
The sanctuary will add a hiking trail around the perimeter of the property, develop a forest stewardship plan with the state, and plant more native warm-season grasses.
