A Versailles man was arrested Monday on counterfeiting charges, according to the Lexington Police Department.
Christopher Joseph Bentley, 37, is charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument and theft by deception, according to police. Bentley is accused of using “Russian novelty notes” to buy merchandise and gift cards at retail stores in Lexington.
Investigators were notified when Bentley tried to open a checking account at a Lexington bank, allegedly attempting to commit new-account fraud, according to police.
Bentley is being held in the Fayette County jail on a $1,000 cash bond, according to the jail website.
