An Eastern Kentucky man attempting to escape police Friday jumped into a river and was later found dead, Kentucky State Police said.
State police were called about a burglary in Elkhorn City in Pike County. An officer en route to the burglary was told that a white van had been driven from the scene, police said in a news release.
The officer found a van matching the description in the Yellow Hill area of Pike County and attempted to stop it. A driver stopped the vehicle and then got out and ran. He then jumped into the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River.
The officer saw the man drop below the surface of the water and never resurface.
A rescue squad found the body of Walter C. Holbrooks, 37, of Elkhorn City, about 5 p.m. Friday.
