A Cynthiana woman accused of stealing more than $8,000 while working in the Scott County clerk's office resigned last month.
Scott County Judge Executive George Lusby said Lori A. Cain resigned in the midst of the state police investigation. Lusby declined to comment further.
Last Thursday, state police charged Cain, 38, with theft by deception of more than $500, a Class D felony. State police received a complaint early last month that money was missing from the clerk's office.
According to court documents, Cain listed several cash transactions as charges to be paid at a later date, "knowing that this was false." She is accused of taking $8,282 between Feb. 25 through Dec. 22.

Because the case is pending, County Clerk Jackie Covington has declined to discuss anything related to the case, including Cain's job duties.
