Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a Lexington man in a shopping center parking lot off Alexandria Drive early Saturday morning.
Rocardo Cole, 29, was found in the parking lot near Camelot West, a strip club at 1761 Alexandria Drive, shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, according to a release from the Fayette County coroner's office.
Cole was pronounced dead at 2:28 a.m. Saturday at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, the release said.
No arrest had been made in the apparent homicide as of 7:30 p.m. Saturday, said Lexington Police Lt. Chris Van Brackle. He said the motive for the shooting was still under investigation.
DeAaron Ballew, manager of Camelot West, said a customer of the club told him and some other employees that a man was lying on the ground in the parking lot in front of Dollar General. The customer of the club called 911, Ballew said.
Ballew said he went up to the man and tried to comfort him. Ballew said he initially only saw a gunshot wound on the man's right buttock. Later, Ballew saw emergency responders raise the man's shirt, and he saw a chest wound.
"I was standing right beside him," Ballew said. "I was trying to get him to respond. I was just trying to be there. At first, it looked like he was OK.
"I would have wanted someone to help me if I was out in the parking lot," Ballew said.
The man didn't say who shot him or why, Ballew said.
"He was coming in and out of consciousness," he said. "They said he was yelling for help earlier."
An autopsy was to be performed either Saturday or Sunday by the state medical examiner's office in Frankfort, the coroner's release said.
Police said anyone with information about the shooting should call them at 258-3600.
