The Kentucky Blood Center announced Tuesday that it plans to build a new 7,500-square-foot Somerset Donor Center to replace the space it leases in Somerset.
The blood center has bought a 2-acre lot in Stonebrook Development, a new business development on U.S. 27 in Somerset.
Bill Reed, president and CEO of the organization, said the facility will also have space available to back up the Lexington operation if needed.
"We anticipate that this new location's phenomenal visibility will increase the amount of blood we collect in the area which may create additional jobs," Reed said.
The Somerset center has about 20 employees.
The Kentucky Blood Center provides blood to nearly 70 Kentucky hospitals and clinics in more than 60 counties.
