A Wing Zone delivery driver apparently shot a would-be robber in self-defense Friday, after the robber demanded money from him at gunpoint, police said.
The man who was shot was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, and his condition was not immediately available, police Lt. Edward Hart said.
Police did not identify anyone involved in the incident.
Witnesses told police the driver pulled up to the curb on Fairmont Court off Lakeshore Drive, near Richmond Road, around 9:45 p.m. Four men were waiting beside a dumpster at the Fairmont Court Apartments, and two of the men approached the driver as he got out of the car.
One of the men had a gun and demanded cash from the driver. At that point, the delivery driver grabbed his own gun, which was legally stored in his vehicle, Hart said.
The driver fled, firing several shots as he ran. Witnesses said six shots were fired total, though it wasn't immediately clear who fired how many shots. Officers recovered both guns and several shell casings, Hart said.
One of the men who approached the delivery car ran several paces and collapsed. He had been shot in the chest.
The other three men fled on foot. A police helicopter circled overhead, but the men had not been found late Friday.
The delivery driver volunteered to be taken to police headquarters to be interviewed by robbery detectives, Hart said.
Hart said although it was early in the investigation, police felt they had several leads to go on.
Family members of the man who was shot came to the scene before police contacted them.
"We're curious to see who contacted them to let them know he was here and he was injured," Hart said. "Those may be people that were involved."
Several pizza delivery drivers have been robbed in the Lakeshore Drive area within the last six months, Hart said.
"This is something the driver probably had in the back of his head when he got here on this scene," he said.
