A Clay County woman shot and killed her son after he attacked her husband Tuesday night, police said.
The shooting happened after Ernie Ferguson, 45, kicked in the door of his mother's and stepfather's house on Engine Branch Road, according to state police and Clay County Sheriff Kevin Johnson.
Ferguson's mother, Judy Gregory, got a 22.-caliber rifle and shot him as he was on top of his stepfather, Johnson said.
Ferguson was flown to the University of Tennessee Hospital in Knoxville, where he died, according to state police.
Never miss a local story.
There was evidence Ferguson had been drinking alcohol before he arrived at his mother's house, Johnson said.
No one has been charged in the shooting, state police said.
Ferguson, a former teacher, has had other run-ins with the law. He pointed a gun at deputies a few months ago, and more recently, he had caused a disturbance at a nursing home where his grandmother lives, Johnson said.
Ferguson had been out of jail only about 24 hours before the attack Tuesday, Johnson said.
Johnson said there were indications the altercation was related to a decision by Ferguson's grandmother to leave money in her will to her daughter — Ferguson's mother — instead of him.
State police are handling the investigation.
