A Rockcastle County man was threatening disciplinary action against several children when he hit his 9-year-old son in the head with a baseball bat Sunday morning, state police said on Monday.
Jesse Vanwinkle, 34, of Livingston is charged with second-degree criminal abuse. He was being held at the Rockcastle County Detention Center, state police said in a news release.
Vanwinkle's son was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital in critical condition. His condition was not available Monday morning.
The assault happened at 10:52 a.m. Sunday at Vanwinkle's home on Sand Hill Road, seven miles south of Mount Vernon, police said.

There were four children, ages 17, 9, 8 and 7, in the house when the boy was struck, said Trooper Don Trosper, spokesman for the state police post that covers Rockcastle County.
Vanwinkle was threatening to discipline some or all the children when he allegedly hit the 9-year-old, Trosper said.
Investigators are trying to determine whether the blow was intentional, Trosper said.
The other three children were not hurt.
State police, the Rockcastle County Sheriff's Office and state child protective services officials are investigating.
