A Lexington man who was taken to the hospital Thursday morning with a bullet wound in his leg apparently shot himself, police said.
The man, who was not named, initially told police someone shot him as he was walking down the street.
About 12:30 a.m., officers went to 200 block of Engman Avenue off North Martin Luther King Boulevard. Firefighters responding to an injury call requested police officers be sent as well, Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.
The man told officers he and a friend were walking down the street when they heard gunshots. The victim felt a bullet tear into his leg.
After investigating and interviewing witnesses, officers determined the man and his friend were mishandling the gun when it discharged accidentally, Roberts said.
Police are treating the case as a personal injury. No charges are expected to be filed.
