A man who was accidentally released from the Fayette County jail Friday remained at large Wednesday.
Hafit Martinez-Hipolito was "inadvertently released" about 3:30 p.m. Friday — the same time as his brother, who had been ordered released by a judge. The brother was supposed to be released; Martinez-Hipolito was not.
Jail officials are trying to determine how the mistake occurred, said Sgt. Jennifer Taylor, the jail's spokeswoman. Taylor said jail officials might issue a news release identifying the cause of the error Thursday.
Martinez-Hipolito, 20, was being held at the jail pending a grand jury indictment for retaliating against a witness and fourth-degree assault. He now faces charges of second-degree escape for failing to return to jail.
