A 32-year-old man has been charged with murder in the killing of his 74-year-old grandmother.
Police responded Wednesday afternoon to a report of a disturbance at the Lily home of Bernice Champlin, on Queen Road, according to a release from the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.
The brother of suspect Jeremy Owens, also of Queen Road, told deputies that Owens was still in the house and had a pistol. He told officers that Owens had shot Champlin.
Owens refused to come out until Sheriff Jon Root talked to him by phone. He was arrested without incident a short time later, according to the release.
The release said that Owens had an argument with his grandmother. She was shot and stabbed. Champlin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Owens was charged with murder and is lodged in the Laurel County Detention Facility.
