A man impersonating a Columbia Gas of Kentucky meter reader tried to enter people's homes in the Cynthiana area, according to a report made to the utility. Columbia Gas and its meter reading contractor Bermex both said Friday that they did not have a representative in the area at that time.
The utility has the following tips to verify a meter reader's identity: ask for identification — all employees should have a photo i.d. card from the utility; or call the customer center at 1-800-432-9345 to verify that work is being done in your area. The meter reader should be in a car that is clearly marked with the utility's name.
Be especially suspicious of anyone claiming to offer a refund or rebates, as such transactions are not delivered by employees, the utility said. If there is a suspicious person, call the police and then the utility.
