A Fayette County grand jury has indicted two men on murder and other charges stemming from a shooting in March in which a popular Henry Clay High School student was killed and two other people were wounded.
Deionta Hayes and Dom inique Godfrey, both 21, are each charged with one count of murder, two counts of first-degree assault and one count of first-degree robbery. Hayes also is charged with being a first-degree persistent felony offender. The indictments were handed down Monday.
Hayes is accused of fatally shooting Chaz Black, a Henry Clay sophomore, on March 18, with assistance from Godfrey, while the two men were committing first-degree robbery, according to the indictment. Hayes, aided by Godfrey, also shot a juvenile, identified in the indictment as K.S., and Laroz Mitchell, causing serious physical injury to both, according to the indictment.
The shootings occurred at an apartment at Man o' War Boulevard and Palumbo Drive, where seven or eight people were shooting dice, according to authorities.
Lexington police detective Robert Wilson, in testimony in Fayette District Court later in March, said Hayes entered the apartment and began shooting about five minutes later. One victim was shot at point-blank range, and Hayes shot at others as they tried to run away, the detective said.
Witnesses said Godfrey, one of the people at the apartment during the dice game, had called Hayes and directed him to the apartment, according to court testimony.
Hayes' family persuaded him to turn himself in at police headquarters. Wilson said during the March hearing that charges could be placed against other people.
Hayes is in custody. His arraignment is set for May 24 in Fayette Circuit Court. An arrest warrant was to be issued for Godfrey, according to court documents.
