To help prevent any further violence, police plan regular patrols and more vigilant monitoring of the scene of a New Year's Eve shooting of two teens in Lexington, authorities said.
A 16-year-old was shot in the chest and a 15-year-old was shot in the hand after a 'disorder' spilled out of a party in a rented space in a Village Drive shopping center late Monday night, said Lt. Chris Young. The rented space was initially referred to as a club.
Lt. David Biroschik said the shot to the chest didn't appear to "hit anything vital." The two were expected to recover after being treated at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.
Young said there had been no arrests in the case as of Tuesday. He said officers who regularly patrol the area would be "more vigilant" about monitoring the site of the shooting in order to head off any potential violence as a result of the shooting.
Though there were "a couple hundred" party-goers inside the space, no one claimed early Tuesday to have seen what happened, Biroschik said. Police officers processed the scene and turned it over to the department's Robbery Homicide Unit, which will investigate in the coming days.
Police did not identify the victims, but messages identifying the victims by the names "Stoose" and "Lucky" circulated on social media sites.
Most called for prayers or updated the teens' conditions. Others elaborated on potential fallout from the shooting.
