Lexington police and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services are investigating a day care center after a 3-year-old boy was left behind in a park after an outing Wednesday, authorities said Thursday.
Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services spokeswoman Jill Midkiff said the Cabinet's Office of Inspector General and its Division of Regulated Child Care are investigating the complaint against Playhouse Daycare Center II at 1440 Forbes Road.
The inspector general's office had not taken action against the center as of Thursday afternoon, Midkiff said.
Shortly before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, a witness called police about a boy walking up and down the street in front of Meadowthorpe Park near New Circle and Leestown roads. The boy could not tell police how he ended up alone, Lexington Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.
Police were conducting a door-to-door neighborhood search when a day care worker returned to the park after realizing the child was missing, Roberts said.
"When they left the park, they forgot the child," Roberts said.
On Thursday, Glendola Lewis, owner of the center, told a Herald-Leader reporter, "It was an honest mistake."
Lewis, who said she has owned the day care center for 33 years, said her employee has been at the center for 19 years and had never had a similar incident. "We feel very bad and very sorry for the parent," Lewis said.
