A 3-year-old boy died early Wednesday after being found in a Powell County pool Tuesday.
Landon Pressnell had been on a child's Big Wheel before he was found in the pool about 9 a.m. Tuesday, deputy coroner Shea Willis said.
Frankie Hall, the boy's great aunt and legal guardian, said she was playing with him in the front yard when a medical condition forced her to go indoors to the bathroom, Powell County Sheriff's Deputy Rob Matthews said.
Hall tried to get the child to come indoors with her, but he refused, and Hall was unable to carry him, Matthews said.
After being indoors for 10 to 15 minutes, Hall was unable to find the child and checked next door before finding him floating in the pool, Matthews said. The Big Wheel was in the deep end of the pool.
Hall performed CPR and called 911, Matthews said.
The child was taken to Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester and then flown to the Kentucky Children's Hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Matthews said.
The boy died at the UK hospital about 2 a.m. Wednesday. The cause of death was drowning, Willis said. Matthews said he is investigating.
Hall had been given custody of the boy soon after he was born, Matthews said. His mother, Nichole Elswick, later died of a drug overdose, he said.
