A woman who allegedly was sexually abused while unconscious at a Lexington strip club has died, according to the Fayette County coroner's office.
Melissa Smiley, 37, died at 7:24 p.m. Monday at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, officials said in a news release. The cause of death has not been determined, pending further investigation and toxicology tests, the news release said.
When Smiley collapsed Thursday night at Fillies Gentleman's Club because of a pre-existing medical condition, a male employee allegedly performed various sexual acts on her, according to police and court documents.
Authorities have not released details about the medical condition that caused her to collapse.
Help wasn't summoned until 20 to 30 minutes after Smiley fell unconscious, Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said Tuesday.
Smiley was put on life support at UK Hospital, Roberts had said previously.
Clyde Wesley Sexton, 71, a handyman at the club, pleaded not guilty Friday to first-degree sexual abuse, court records said. No additional charges had been filed against Sexton on Tuesday morning; "the next step in this investigation is for an autopsy to be completed," Roberts said.
Sexton was described as a friend of the woman he is accused of abusing, according to court documents.
Portions of the alleged offense were recorded by security cameras, according to Fayette court records. In an interrogation, Sexton admitted to fondling the victim.
Strip club representatives could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
