A lightning strike killed two Garrard County men on Wednesday afternoon.
Garrard County Coroner Daryl Hodge said Scotty Elam Jr., 25, and Bobby Lee Maggard, 29, both of Lancaster, died instantly about 1:30 p.m.
The lightning struck at Wilmot Farm, which straddles the Madison-Garrard county line, at a barn on Oscar Ray Road.
Hodge said 10 men were working in two groups to hang tobacco in separate barns. When a storm began, a group of men ran out of one of the barns to warn the others that it would be dangerous if lightning struck.
Never miss a local story.
Just as the group approached the other barn, the lightning struck, killing Elam and Maggard, Hodge said.
Hodge said he thought one man was injured, but he was unaware of any other injuries.
Hodge said the bodies had to be removed in a four-wheel drive pick-up truck, rather than in his vehicle, in order to make it across a rising creek.
"We normally would have been out on the scene much longer," Hodge said. "But the creek was rising so quickly ... we had to get the bodies out of there," Hodge said.
