A Lexington man who pointed a laser at a police helicopter pleaded guilty last week to second-degree wanton endangerment.
Police say Steven French, 50, was working as a security guard at a construction site and told them he got bored and wanted to test the range of the laser sight on his gun. The laser hit the helicopter's cockpit three times before officers on the ground determined its origin.
Fayette District Judge T. Bruce Bell sentenced French to a year in jail, but he must serve only 30 days with credit for time served. The balance of the sentence was probated for two years.
In addition, French forfeited the 9mm firearm with a laser mount to Lexington police. Another count of wanton endangerment was merged into the second count.
