Residents in Bell, Harlan and Knox counties should beware of a new telephone scam, according to Kentucky State Police.
Harlan County residents have received phone calls from people claiming to represent the "U.S. Government Grants Department," according to the Harlan KSP post.
The callers try to get residents to give them money in order to receive grants. They've asked people for checking account numbers and credit card information, state police said.
Troopers advised residents to ignore phone calls, emails or regular mail from anyone they do not know.
Scammers usually prey on the elderly, trying to extort money from them, police said.
Residents with complaints about such calls can contact the Harlan post for information at (606) 573-3131. The post covers Harlan, Bell and Knox counties.
