A man charged with slashing an elderly woman at a Lexington supermarket will receive a mental health evaluation.
Corey Lane Cummins, 44, of Lexington, is charged with first-degree assault in the attack, which occurred about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday inside a Kroger store at 150 West Lowry Lane.
The woman, whose name has not been released, remains at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where she underwent surgery Wednesday night, according to police. She is in her 70s.
The victim was in serious condition Wednesday night, police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.
An evaluation for Cummins was ordered during a hearing in Fayette District Court Thursday.
The court also entered a preliminary not guilty plea on Cummins' behalf and referred his case to the public defender's office.
According to documents filed in court, Cummins told two witnesses after the attack "I did that to her; I cut her."
Cummins told police that he might harm other inmates at the Fayette County Detention Center if he was placed in the jail's general population, according to the documents.
Police said surveillance video from inside the store showed Cummins following the victim just before the attack.
Cummins is due back in court Feb. 20.
